Wig roller found in the grounds of Herborough House

Rollers like this were made from pipe clay and used during the 1600s to shape gentlemen’s wigs.  This roller was discovered by Walter Money in the grounds of his home, Herborough House, which was located near the site of the multi-storey car park next to the Kennet Centre, Newbury.  Walter Money was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities who published a number of books on the history of Newbury and is buried in Newtown Road Cemetery.
