A kete basket made and used by Maori people of New Zealand. Ketes are traditionally woven from New Zealand flax. Acquired by George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon. George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert was born in 1866 at Highclere Castle, Hampshire. His father, the 4th Earl, was a founding member of the Newbury Literary & Scientific Institute. His interest in antiquities and history was passed on to his son who became known throughout the world after his discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen with Howard Carter in 1922. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon had participated in and funded excavations in Egypt from 1907 until his death in 1923. During his life the 5th Earl of Carnarvon took an active interest in the Museum. In 1906 he donated a diverse range of objects including this one.
